PRESS RELEASE                                                                                                        17-5-2020

By  C.H. VENKATACHALAM, GEN SECRETARY,  ALL INDIA BANK EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION

ALL INDIA BANK EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION sets apart Rs. One Crore from its General Fund to foot the train fare of migrant workers for their travel back to their places.  AIBEA has written to Railway Minister offering to pay train fare for migrant workers upto Rs. One crore.

In the present lockdown situation, the worst affected due to the restrictions have been the migrant workers.  There are nearly 8 crores migrant workers who have gone one State to another State in search of some livelihood.  These migrant workers have already been the most exploited lot because they have been working for paltry wages without any social security cover.  Due to present lockdown, they are now out of any job as all economic activities are now under lockdown.  Hence they have no wages and no means to eat.  Since there is uncertainty when the lockdown will be removed and normalcy may take quite a long time, out of desperation, these migrant workers have been flocking back to their native villages thousands of kilometers away.
Due to lack of train or bus service, they have even gone by walk and cycle and many have lost their precious lives due to unfortunate accidents.  Government has recently run Shramik train to ferry them to their States.  But the problem arose about who will pay the train fare.  Some arrangements are made by Central and State Government but still the problem persists.
Looking to the pathetic plight of the migrant workers, All India Bank Employees Association has decided to set apart Rs. One crore from its General Funds and has written to the Hon Railway Minister Shri Piyush Goyal offering to foot the train fare of migrant workers upto Rs. One crore.
We hope that the Government and the Railway Minister will accept our offer so that we can extend our help to the affected migrant workers.

C.H. VENKATACHALAM
GENERAL  SECRETARY
